can a log cabin quilt patch all be made the same and then the lay outs be different?

I am wondering should I cut all the patches first calculating the length I will need of each patch? Or should I first cut the center square and then just eyeball the fabric “logs” as I go along? Also this may sound like a dumb question, but after I have sewn the centre square with the first log, I got to sew on the next log it always seems a little longer, is that because of the seam allowance? And if so do I centre the next piece , or do I leave all the extra on one side of the patch?

What quilting pattern do you use on a Log Cabin quilt. I have the quilt top done but do not have any idea how it is suppose to be quilted. I sure don’t want to quilt every line on it. Has anyone any ideas?

Was in a quilting magazine within the last several years and I have lost the pattern right in the middle of making this quilt. You use one color in every block and the other colors in only half the blocks. It looks kind of like a color wash if you use 3 different prints from the same fabric collection of floral prints or a Monet painting.

The size is approx 40 in square.
